Daniel Mensah, RD

On behalf of the Governing Board (GB) of the Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (GAND), I am pleased to welcome you to Kumasi, to the beautiful campus of KNUST, and the 2023 Edition of our Biennial Conference of Nutrition and Dietetics (COND-2023). COND is the one of the major activities highlighting every Biennial Congress of GAND. COND is a scientific conference that affirms a core principle of the practice of dietetics and nutrition – evidence-base, and brings together all members who are in this spectrum: researchers, academics, professionals, practitioners, and collaborators – found in our universities and research institutions, clinical practice, public health, industry, and in governmental and non-governmental agencies.

The first edition of the COND was held as a virtual conference in 2021, in the mist of the COVID-19. Well, COVID did not stop GAND from pursuing its aim of organizing one of the most anticipated food and nutrition conference in Africa. What makes this year’s COND most special is the fact that, this will be our first in-person conference. So welcome someone to COND 2023. COND2023 will take a capacity building and implementation approach and will concentrate on four main sub-themes:

  • Food systems and food environment.
  • Climate change and sustainable diet.
  • Food and Nutrition governance
  • Capacity strengthening for implementing sustainable food systems for nutrition

The objectives of COND-2023 are;

  • To explore the challenges and opportunities of food systems in Ghana, and sub- Saharan Africa, and how they are linked to nutrition related double disease burden situation.
  • To identify implementable action and strategies to improve and attain sustainable food systems as a panacea to improved food security and nutritional adequacy for all
  • To equip the nutrition and dietetic professional, and food and agricultural practitioner with capacity to contribute to the attainment of improved food system and how its impacting on efforts at preventing and/or managing the double disease burden at the national and individual level.

It is expected that COND 2023 will:

  • Evaluate existing national intervention programs on food and nutrition security, and where needed provide leadership in redesigning, implementing, and monitoring such programs
  • Establish a collaborative national front towards the attainment of sustainable food systems across the various regions and geographical areas of the country.
  • Develop a five (5) year project aimed at improving nutrition-related target through the improvement of sustainable food systems in Ghana

Let me provide a brief overview of COND-23 as we eagerly await your active participation. COND-2023 will be held for three days from October 17th (Tuesday) to October 19th (Thursday). The conference will begin on Tuesday 17th with registration, and a symposium at College of Sciences Auditorium KNUST Campus. This symposium will focus on: Quality Assurance Framework for Nutrition Assessment starting your entrepreneurial Journey: From Concept to Company, and participation is highly recommended for those with particular interest practice, academia, and business startups.

The day will continue with a Public Symposium at the Kumasi Cultural Centre, which is GAND’s CSR to the people of Kumasi. The conference will open on Wednesday 18th at the KNUST Business School Conference Center, where all other conference activities will be held. Moving between the main auditorium and breakout rooms is made easier as lectures are held in two adjacent lecture buildings, giving you more flexibility in scheduling.

COND 2023 is privileged to be graced by astute world super stars in nutrition, whose work and influence has span diverse areas, boundaries, and lives. At the appropriate time, these super stars like Prof. Francis Zotor, Prof. Paul Amuna, Prof. Richmond Aryeetey, Prof. Steven Wootton, Prof. Reginald Annan, Prof. Amos Laar, Prof. Kingsley Pereko, and many others, will be introduced to participants

Research dissemination through oral and poster presentations will be held on the second and the third days. This program is designed to encourage interaction among practitioners, researchers and students. We look forward to the active involvement of our younger participants. There will also be regular events, including Luncheon Seminars and exhibitions by sponsors and others. COND 2023 will be filled with opportunities for participants to network and interact with one another.

The COND organizing committee with its appendages: the Local Organizing Committee (made up of the GAND Middle Zone and members in the KNUST), the Scientific Committee, the Sponsorship Committee,  Journal and Research Committee, and the Publicity and IT Committee: hopes to pull off a perfect conference. However, we ask for your patience and understanding in case of any shortcomings, and we would appreciate it if you could share your opinion of the event with us through our organizing committee or secretariat.

Last but not least, this conference would not be possible without support from businesses and various other organizations. We appreciate all sponsors of our Luncheon Seminars, and our Corporate Sponsors such as JM Addo & Sons, Lets Consult, Sankofa Natural Spices, and Petrosol. We still ask for your further assistance in making this conference an even greater success.

It is the responsibility of COND organizing committee and the GAND-GB to make sure that this conference runs smoothly, but its success largely rests on the collective effort of our members and sponsors. Hence, we would like to extend our warmest welcome to all, and we look forward to your keen support and participation.
